Travel alongside Dave as he journeys to the Rocky Mountains to see why Former First Lady Betty Ford loved the Vail Valley and the Rocky Mountains that surround it. She lent her name to this unique Alpine garden which has become not only the highest elevation public garden in the world but also an internationally recognized center for research, preservation and education on high elevation wildflowers.
The garden consists of various botanical zones organized by elevation and slope aspect with a gushing mountain creek cascading from one level to the next under massive timber bridges.
Also in this episode, Dave travels to Santa Fe where David Salman showed him around the demonstration garden for his retail nursery and mail order catalog, High Country Gardens, in historic Santa Fe, New Mexico. A life long resident of Santa Fe, David chose drought tolerant hardy perennials that provide masses of color for intermountain, plains, and west coast gardeners.
