Landscapes, such as the Danube Water Meadows, have become increasingly rare in Europe and with its astonishing variety of animals, plants and picturesque scenery, it is of unique environmental importance. For more than a century, the beaver was extinct in Austria but this fascinating creature has now been reintroduced. Both hardwood and softwood trees can be found in the densely vegetated forests and they are surpassed in their beauty only by the colorful meadows of springtime. Today, around 20 percent of the national park consists of water and according to recent estimates, over 60 varieties of fish inhabit this region of which around half are endangered species. The Danube Water Meadows National Park is an irresistible attraction and one of the last remaining natural riverscapes in Europe to have survived the encroachment of man.
