Over the millions of years of all the world’s continents, Africa has become the land of the hooved animal. Each species has developed it’s own mechanisms for feeding, mating, rearing young, and surviving. We’ve come to South Africa to follow the giraffe and other uniquely evolved hooved animals in the wild. About 15 million years ago, due to widespread cooling and drying of the Earth’s climate, grasslands replaced much of the forest’s habitat. Evolution then adapted a host of ungulids to rely on eating grass as well as those that browsed on courser forest material. They also developed features better suited to life on the open grasslands, including longer legs and locomotion in which they in affect walked on their toes. Take an look into the lives of hooved species. We’ve come to South Africa to follow the giraffe and other uniquely evolved hooved animals in the wild.
