The Adventure Continues!

Post-depression New York received a much needed shot in the arm when a group of businessmen organized what would turn out to be an unforgettable extravaganza - The New York World Fair. Several countries participated, giving the fair an international status. Roughly 200,000 people attended the grand opening on April 30, 1939. This thematic and amazingly futuristic show was aptly dubbed the "World of Tomorrow". Sadly, it failed to generate profits.

This amazing set of DVDs, our second on the New York World Fair, contains colored footage of the various themes that were on display - the gas and electric industry, the telephone industry, television, contemporary art, agriculture, and dairy farming to name a few.

New York World Fair, (Reel 3)
This DVD portrays displays at the "World of Tomorrow" fair, focusing briefly on various themes such as gas and electricity industry, parades, contemporary art, sculpture, musical fountains and puppetry. The footage on Hollywood star Jane Wither's visit to the fair is also included.

New York World's Fair, (Reel 3)

New York World's Fair, (Reel 4)
This DVD takes you on a delightful pictorial tour of the fair and captures, in color, the activities and displays at the Belgian and Russian pavilions. You will see some great outdoor shots of visitors as they walk among the artistically designed fountains and flags fluttering in the breeze. Also featured is the General Motors "Futurama" ride, which showcased the world, as it was expected to look after twenty years.

EDITORIAL REVIEW :

The General Motors Exhibition "Futurama" at the 1939 New York World Fair typified the vision and dreams of people struggling to shrug off the effects of a long economic struggle. The skyscrapers, elevated pedestrian ways and highways that could carry traffic at a mind- boggling 100 miles per hour were, fascinatingly, GM's vision of the country in 'far away' 1960. I am tempted to think that the fair derived its' name "World Of Tomorrow", from such themes. This set of DVDs provides a comprehensive overview of the attractions and exhibits at the Fair.

Learn about what was trendy (lots of people wearing similarly styled clothes) and what was modern (the electric section and industrial buildings). Learn about what made the fair an international event (participation by Russians and Belgians) and what was intriguing (Babe Ruth's footprints cast in cement and Hollywood star Jane Wither's visit to the fair). Capture the atmosphere of the fair as the camera records images of just about everything at the exposition - lots of people, buildings, murals, gardens and fountains. You will catch a glimpse of the symbolic Trylone Perisphere, and the Schaefer Center. The focus of these DVDs is more on information and less on entertainment.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS :

"This incredible set of DVDs continues the thorough visual examination of the New York fair of '39 that was started in the previous set of DVDs (Volume l). The record of this event is arguably among the best in terms of the wide coverage of outdoor action. I got to see some of the pavilions at the fair but the rest of the film clips continued to entertain with some glorious pictures of people and music and the futuristic GM pavilion."

"This set of DVDs took me on delightful tour of the fair and it was quite fascinating to see what people called 'futuristic' way back in the '30s. The breathtaking beauty of the gardens and the many fountains that adorned the grounds is worth seeing in many of the clips. The facades of various internationals pavilions stand out as being very creative and original, as were the Trylone and Perisphere. Although a few of the shots are a little hazy, you do get the overall picture. This set of DVDs, is refreshingly original in recording the history of the fair, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any collector of historical DVDs."
