Looking at modern Bangkok today, a city of nearly eight million people, it's hard to imagine Thailand as the country of the elephant. But Siam, as the nation was called until 1939 has a long and close relationship with the giant mammal since ancient times. In fact, no animal has had a more significant impact on Thailand's human culture and beliefs than the elephant. Religion and elephants have been intertwined for thousands of years. The Hindu god Ginesha took the form of a man with an elephant's head. In the 3rd Century B.C. Buddhism came to Thailand, eventually replacing Hinduism as the national religion. Though the gods of Hindu were dismissed by Buddists in favor of inner enlightenment, the elephant as a symbol has remained prominent outside of temples and in public areas. Into The Wild will take a close up look at both species of elephants.
