Here’s what they’re saying about

South African Safari

By John P.Wilson and Denice L.Wilkins

BOOKLIST April 15, 1999
Adult.A cut above the usual lion-and-elephant fare of other video safaris, this excellent production features naturalists-filmmakers John Wilson and Denice Wilkins, who embark on an enthralling tour of South Africa’s natural wonders. The hosts, heard in the voice-over commentary and occasionally seen on camera, are attentive to the natural landscapes, distinctive ecosystems, and biological diversity of each region they visit. The investigate the denizens of numerous wildlife preserves and national parks, spotlight their accommodations (which range from a simple grass hut to sumptuous game park lodges), and recognize the successful cooperation of public and private interests in preserving wildlife.A lengthy but exhilarating trip for wandering naturalists and intrepid travelers.-- Irene Wood

LIBRARY JOURNAL March 1, 2000

South African Safari is photographed and narrated by Canadian cinematographer John Wilson. His companion, naturalist Denice Wilkins, assists with the narration and is often on camera participating in the activities. The team highlights the many natural and wildlife sights of South Africa while acknowledging the country’s oppressive past.National parks, the Kalahari desert, nature and game preserves, recreated tribal villages, a stem train, the historic sites of Cape Town, and seeing the country by ultra light and helicopter are presented. The photography is vivid and skilled, with some breathtaking aerial and wildlife shots.Travelers, (armchair and actual will appreciate the overview of the country’s attractions. The tape provides good value and solid information and is recommended for public library collections.--Melody A.Moxley

VIDEO LIBRARIAN July-August 1999

The biodiversity found in South Africa is amazing for a nation its size.“A world in one country,” boasts both deserts and jungles with everything in between. In a briskly paced travelogue with strong promotional content, Denice Wilkins and John Wilson present an overview of just about every tourist activity a visitor to South Africa could hope to experience.Traveling via helicopter, horseback, houseboat, train, and even by ostrich, they have photographed all the sights from the vantage point of the average tourist. As they visit a variety of nature reserves and parks, their first priority is animal watching, in a Land rover, from behind a blind or up close and personal (don’t try this at home!) Wilkins and Wilson also cover recreational opportunities, including golf, bird watching, surfing, hot air ballooning and vineyard excursions.Native culture is lightly touched upon - some staged tribal rituals and a brief glimpse of rock art - as are the delicate aspects of racial relations.Prospective tourists should find this both helpful and enjoyable.
