Emmy Award-Winning PBS Series

Program 1: Can Animals Predict Disaster? - The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 was one of the worst disasters in human history, with nearly 300,000 people killed. Yet, incredibly, almost all of the animals in the area survived. Did they sense the coming disaster in time to flee? When disaster looms, does the earth send signals that animals can pick up, but humans cannot? Can we harness these skills to save human lives before disaster strikes? Join scientists around the world as they explore these animal omens, and re-examine ancient ideas about how animals can predict disaster, which are now gaining credence in scientific circles.

Program 2: Killers in Eden - For nearly 100 years, the Australian coastal town of Eden was the setting for a remarkable collaboration between two species-humans and killer whales-as they joined in hunts for migrating baleen whales. Teams of killer whales would actually herd the plankton-eating baleen whales into the bay at Eden, and notify the whalers that they had arrived with prey by smacking their tails on the water. Then, they would wait for the hunters to arrive with their boats and harpoons to participate in the kill and share in the spoils. Rooted in historical fact and told by members of the community who actually witnessed the hunts, this is a compelling story of interspecies cooperation.
