This 2-DVD Set Is Chock Full Of
Classic Chevrolet Car Ads From The 1930s!

Experience Some Of The Earliest Advertisements Ever Filmed
–  Just As Television Was Being Born!

See The USA In Your Chevrolet!

The History of Advertising – Automobiles 1930 to 1940 is a vintage collection of high quality movie clips and television ads highlighting one of the great American car companies – Chevrolet! It is the finest collection of advertising snapshots available, providing a valuable insight in to the marketing strategies implemented during this historic time.

"I used to be a film student, so I was very curious when I saw that you guys had some of the original Jam Handy shorts. I’m glad I ordered these DVDs. The film quality is incredible!"
- Bart Calendar, New York, NY (bcalendar@aol.com)

Experience The Magic Of Master Film Maker Jam Handy!

As any serious student of advertising or film knows, Jam Handy was one of the great masters of cinematic advertising. On this disk you will see a nearly endless stream of some of Jam Handy’s greatest work. Compare these classic films to the average car ad today. You will be amazed at Jam Handy’s genius!

This 2-DVD set depicts classic advertisement films and examples of automobile centric stories. It includes classic "Capitalistic Realist" dramas showing the manufacture of cars from foundry to finished vehicle. Also features examples of a day in the life of automobile workers in the U.S. while attempting to convince them that their own fortunes were inexorably linked to the fortunes of the company.

A few of those films were designed to promote corporate citizenship rather than any specific model of automobile. While it forcefully demonstrates how central automobile manufacturing was to the American economy it even more strikingly shows the effects of the automobile on our landscape.

Newsreels – The Original Product Placement!

Product placement is everywhere today. When you see an actor in a movie drinking a Coke or stopping to buy a copy of the New York Times, you can bet those companies paid to have their products shown. But, have you ever wondered where the practice of product placement started? The newsreels on these DVDs will show you! It was common practice in the 1930s to show newsreels before the start of the movie feature. Most people did not have televisions yet, so TV news was not generally available. The movie house was one of their best news sources!

What Chevrolet did was sponsor newsreels and then include stories about their cars. Suddenly product placement was born!

"I showed these DVDs to my advertising professor! He couldn’t believe it! All of the supposedly "modern" advertising methods we were learning were on display here – back in the 1930s! Wow! This taught me a lot!"
- Jonathan Champlovier – London, UK (jonty@ifrance.com)

This 2-DVD Set Is A Great Visual Reference
And Study Guide For Any History Buff or Student!

Inside you will find hours of entertaining footage shot by some of the best production teams of the era. Because television was in its infancy, directors and writers from the best movie studios were brought in to create this incredible advertising landscape! Here is just a small glimpse of what you will find on these two incredible DVDs!

The Trip
By 1939 people were tired of the hardships of the Great Depression and ready to embrace creature comforts again. That is the point of this clip. In this 1939 short, a suburban California family gets all dressed up to drive their new Chevrolet to see grandma and grandpa, who still live on the family farm. Dad’s in a suit and tie, and Mom has on her Sunday best and chic hat. Are they dressed up to go see the grandparents or are they dressed up to ride in their new Chevrolet? The car is used to symbolize comfort, glamour, conspicuous consumption and personal mobility.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

Few inventions have impacted the world as profoundly as the creation of the automobile. Significantly, the story of the birth and growth of the automobile industry is sandwiched between that of two forgettable economic depressions that left people with an enormous craving for better standards of living.

Striving to carve a niche for themselves at a time when the burgeoning neo-rich American middleclass was embracing creature comforts with open arms, automobile manufacturers like Chevrolet took to advertising on the celluloid medium. Several factors favored this strategy. People were flocking to movie houses in search of amusement, Hollywood was churning out low-budget thrillers by the dozen, and importantly the ‘television era’ was still a decade away.

With the stage thus set, Chevrolet turned to one man whose name was already synonymous with outstanding advertising films – Jam Handy. The clips on these DVDS highlight both, the class of Handy as a filmmaker and Chevrolet’s uncanny insight and innovative marketing strategies. While Handy produced highly effective ad films, Chevrolet’s farsighted policies focused moviegoers’ attention on the comforts, benefits and economy afforded by Chevrolet automobiles rather than the automobiles themselves.

Packed with humor, statistics and technical detail, these clips – which are preserved miraculously well on DVDs by  A2ZCDS - offer a fabulous peek into the promotional strategies employed by automobile manufactories in the ‘30s and ‘40s, while spelling out the tremendous impact of automobiles on American lifestyle.

Witness how a rare combination of skills and foresight fetched Chevrolet the mileage it was seeking to achieve through these memorable advertisements.
