Its proximity to Europe means Kent was always going to be the frontline of England's defenses and the inhabitants of the coastal county had to adapt quickly to their new position as prime targets for Hitler's armed forces. Having dealt with years of bombing raids and land-based shelling from France, Hitler then unleashed a new weapon that had devastating consequences - the V1 and V2 rockets.
