This dvd set contains a two versions of George Orwell's novel 1984. This set features the BBC Live TV Productions feature as well as the Columbia Pictures Production.

BBC Live TV Productions plot:

George Orwell's novel of a totalitarian future society in which a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love. After The Atomic War the world is divided into three states. London is the capital of Oceania, ruled by a party who has total control over all its citizens. Winston Smith is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments. One day he commits the crime of falling in love with Julia. They try to escape Big Brother's listening and viewing devices, but, of course, nobody can really escape...

Columbia Pictures Production plot:

A filmization of George Orwell's cautionary novel, 1984 is set in a futuristic totalitarian society where individuality is forbidden. The leader is the never-seen "Big Brother," whose minions have monitored and bugged the activities of the population so that no one can hide any "subversive" thoughts. Edmond O'Brien plays Winston Smith, a government functionary satisfied with his lot, until he commits the illegal act of falling in love with Julia (Jan Sterling), a member of the anti-sex league. The lovers try to escape the all-powerful influence of Big Brother, but their every move is recorded by listening and viewing devices. Both are captured and sent to rehabilitation centers;preying upon Winston's and Julia's innermost fears, the lieutenants of Big Brother break down their resistance and force them to betray one another.

Running Time: 197 Minutes
MPAA Ratings: NR

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

I saw this movie as a young boy,and at the time I was very naive as to what they meant by "Big Brother" Many people to day, in particular the young, do not know the real meaning to Big Brother. Another name for it is the "New World Order" As in the Bible, you will have a noticeable stamp on your body in order to buy food or what have you. And your whereabouts will be monitored. And for this reason, I've NEVER forgotten this movie. It's a must see film by those that are as naive as I was, when I was a young boy.

USER REVIEWS:

A film that is very much of it's time, but somehow manages to stay current and important with each generation. It's well made, believable and affecting;choosing not to blame Communism (as a lot of western films of the 50s did), or the supposed democracy of the west, which is very refreshing. Something I'd recommend everyone to watch. (Sophie Burgess)
