Director Robert D. Webb shot this beautiful classic feature film in Tarpon Springs, Florida, along the sponge docks where the Greeks enjoy a historical heritage. The first film to include underwater scenes, the movie was an instant success. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD.
The intense rivalry between Greek and American sponge fishermen for gleanings off the coast of Florida comes to a head when Arnold and his friends, the Rhys brothers pinch a load of sponges from the father and son team of Mike (Gilbert Roland) and Tony (Robert Wagner) Petrakis. Determined to recoup the loss, Tony decides to risk diving off the dangerous 12-mile reef and is killed when he falls off the reef. Mike, who is madly in love with Gwyneth (Terry Moore) , an American beauty, is now torn between his devotion for Gwyneth and his intense, inborn anti-American sentiments.
Running Time: 103 Minutes
MPAA Ratings: NR
"In only their third ever production, Cinemascope undertook the challenge of including underwater scenes in this thrilling, historic movie from the A2ZCDS DVD treasure chest – something that was never done successfully before. Directed by Robert D. Webb, this classic feature film centers on the fishing and commerce of sponges off the eastern coast of the United States. Webb uses the glorious world beneath the waves that few have imagined and fewer have set their eyes on as a fascinating backdrop for this offbeat narrative. He also showcases the intense rivalry between sponge farmers that at times cost men their lives. Shot off the gorgeous coast of Florida, the locations add a realistic touch to the narrative. The breathtaking underwater shots provide a welcome reprieve in this absorbing tale. Webb has also made clever use of romance to good effect. Robert Wagner, Terry Moore and Gilbert Roland bring the unusual narrative to life through some endearing performances, while a lively score and captivating dialogues hold the storyline together delightfully. Join the sponge divers as they sink beneath the surface of the Atlantic into a world that is bound to leave you spellbound!
"Given that underwater cinematography was in its infancy then, I found the techniques used in this classic old movie surprisingly advanced. There are dynamic undercurrents of a cultural message between the swashbuckling, romance and intrigue. I enjoyed ‘Beneath The 12-Mile Reef’ thoroughly."

"What I enjoyed the most was the masterful depiction of shifting loyalties. Gilbert Roland is brilliant, and Terry Moore was an aptly cast in her role of an American girl who must make cross-cultural choices. ‘Beneath The 12-Mile Reef’ is a great feature film from A2ZCDS, and I recommend it highly."
