Lucky Strike Marching
This Lucky Strike cigarette commercial demonstrates the effects of war on the national consciousness. It used stop-motion animation to show cigarettes marching like our proud American soldiers. Beyond the historical significance of screening cigarette ads, the commercial itself is interesting in that it would have taken an enormous amount of time and effort to do the animation for this 1 minute advertisement!

Lucky Strike Dancing
Yet another classic Lucky Strike ad, featuring stop-motion animation of square-dancing cigarettes! The square dancing cigarettes, the INSANE jingle and the whole production level is truly amazing. If cigarettes were still allowed on television today would Lucky Strikes be in a mosh pit? Just something to consider...

Meet King Joe
Another Harding College gem, this theatrical cartoon was produced to create a deeper understanding of what has made America the finest place in the world to live. Joe, who wears overalls and talks with a pseudo-Brooklyn accent, is king of the workers of the world because the machinery in his factory multiplies strength and efficiency. This is part of the American way of doing things, the narrator tells us.

Why Play Leap Frog
This is a third Harding College Cold war-era cartoon aimed at convincing workers that increased productivity brings about greater purchasing power. This sharp-looking cartoon is beautifully animated by John Sutherland Productions. Joe works at the Dilly-Doll factory as a face painter, and is upset because nearly every one of his raises is offset by an increase in the cost of goods. But the narrator explains that labor costs are to blame and Joe quickly learns to use the system to his own benefit. It is a Freedom Foundation award-winner shot in Technicolor.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

Be prepared for a virtual blast from the past when you slip this DVD into your player. Thereís just no way of dragging yourself from the screen as one timeless animated classic ad film follows another in a seemingly endless stream.

The 1940s was a time when the art of animation came of age and the ability to use hand- drawn images to create an illusion of motion made it possible for producers to bring to the screen, humor, adventure, and creativity as never before. Caricatures and fairy tale characters sprang to life on the screen, portraying them as they had lived in the imaginations of so many fairy tale fans for centuries. What better means could advertisers use to grab the attention of people who were intensely preoccupied with eking out a living?

Packed to the brim with humor, these cartoons convey features and benefits of products in the most alluring manner and it isnít surprising that they were highly successful in serving the purpose they were designed for.

Witness the work of some of the biggest names in the history of animated films in this DVD and learn how manufacturers put this art to great use in the 40s!
