The first generation of motion pictures was, by today’s standards, quite basic. Only movement was emphasized without even a passing thought for a story or sound. One of the earliest movie shorts was a collection of 15-30 second scenarios created by the Lumiere Brothers in France. These were mere collections of short scenes of daily occurrences and of no real significance - a train arriving at a station, a man watering his garden, men playing cards, people getting off of a ferry boat and a street vendor selling his wares. At about the same time Thomas Alva Edison too was producing similar moving pictures in the United States.

Nonetheless, these shorts thrilled audiences, despite their lack of form and primitive nature. While the first lot of moving pictures focused on movement, the second generation moved on to including story lines. This began as early as 1900. With the passage of time, however, motion pictures grew in stature, technology and variety. Soon advertisers recognized the tremendous potential motion pictures carried in inspiring and influencing audiences. In fact, ad films have created a place all their own in the world of motion pictures, with highly trained professionals applying themselves to delivering sales pitches in as enticing a manner as possible.

This 2-DVD set contains fabulous examples of early ad films, most of which were produced by the famous Calvin Workshop.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

It doesn’t matter from which angle you examine the clips included in these DVDs - from that of a critic, a historian, a student or a pro - you are likely to end up agreeing that they are fabulous masterpieces, each one of them. Produced at an age when movie houses provided a large chunk of entertainment, advertisement films did a marvelous job of portraying products as irresistible objects of desire to the movie audiences. The producers of these clips - the inimitable Calvin Workshop in most cases - have gone a step further in providing an in-depth examination of how wisdom garnered through years of patient trial and error has been harnessed in the making of these masterpieces.

Using generous portions of humor, the producers also drive home significant lessons about the art of producing classy motion pictures, some of which are often blatantly ignored by producers. You are given a wonderful insight into what goes on in a studio - and the minds of people working in them. In addition you have some masterly advice on how you could take up photography as a hobby or even a profession, despite the surplus of talent in Hollywood - the Mecca of all filmmakers.

Above all, however, you cannot miss the relevance of these documentaries though they date back to over half a century. Photography has charmed men for ages and will continue to do so as long as the spirit of adventure and the need for recreation exist. For this reason, and perhaps many more that you will gather as you lose yourself in these masterful creations, I strongly recommend this set of DVDs to all those who claim to be ad film buffs, marketing professionals or simply people with a passing interest in photography.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:

"I have yet to come across a more edifying and humorous discourse than this on the subject of movie making. The clips are based on well-researched and fabulously scripted themes, and are as relevant today as they were fifty years ago. Thanks for this wonderful discourse."
