Had it not been for the shy, soft spoken and unassuming Rick Prelinger, the world would surely have been cheated out of thousands of fascinating and historic documentary films. It was Prelinger who salvaged, catalogued and stored nearly 100,000 reels of film - from the earliest silent black and white masterpieces to hi-tech modern documentaries. But for Prelinger’s timely and selfless intervention, most of these masterpieces would have ended up in trashcans, while the more fortunate ones may have languished in some obscure archival graveyard.

These films were designed for viewing in classrooms, in community or professional meetings, and sometimes in theaters or on early television - and then forgotten. But these ephemeral gems live on in this unlikely 2,500-square-foot warehouse, which the world recognizes as the "Prelinger Archives". Few people passing the unremarkable building in an equally non-descript district in downtown Manhattan would guess that they are but a few yards away from a treasure-trove of historic films. Stacked on 12-foot-high metal shelves and spilling on to the untidy floor, the films are recognized by titles taped to the sides of each canister. That these are anything but products of Hollywood is evidenced by the titles they carry - The Honey Industry, Resistance Welding, Good Grooming For Girls, and Things Expand When Heated.

Prelinger who once described himself as "a mad historian without a diploma" has devoted well over a decade to the pursuit of his passion, which is collecting old films. To quote him, "They're far more important than feature films". Although the Library of Congress acquired most of Prelinger’s films in 2002, the Archives live on in the obscure corner of Manhattan, and more significantly in the hearts of vintage film buffs.

This 2-DVD set carries a fabulous documentary on the Prelinger Archives. Undoubtedly, the value of this gem alone is priceless. As a bonus, you are treated to nine other brilliantly scripted documentaries, which deal with film production technology.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

Rigors of modern day living seldom permit us the luxury of examining how things work. Not surprisingly, we take most scientific inventions for granted. This 2-DVD set is primarily intended to show you how things worked in a film studio over half a century ago. Although movie technology has undergone a sea change, the fundamental concepts that govern filmmaking have remained unchanged;making this set an invaluable historic and educational treasure.

Found here are fabulous examples of early educational documentaries. Riveting clips explain how sound is recorded on film and how persistence of vision is a blessing to motion picture buffs. The beautifully dramatized discourse on preservation of films (Murder on the Screen) brings into sharp focus the passion with which filmmakers guarded their handiwork back then.

Also featured here is some delightful slow motion footage of graceful gymnasts, something that may have evoked a great deal of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from audiences over fifty years ago. Equally delightful is the revelation of how filmmakers and consumer goods manufacturers harnessed the magical lure of motion pictures to advertise their wares. Among the first to cash in on this opportunity was Chevrolet. Using innovations such as animation, slow motion photography and color films, this automobile manufacturer brought the show room right into movie theatres.

All in all, this is an engrossing journey into the world of films and I enjoyed every moment of it.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:

"This DVD set answered a lot of questions my kids had about films and how they are made in Hollywood. The fabulous examples and illustrations used here are truly graphic and you don’t need to add anything to what is already there by way of explanation. Thanks, when it comes to knowledge about filmmaking I can now proudly say that I have the smartest kids on the block."

"This DVD set on the History of Motion Pictures is both enlightening and fascinating. We get to see the beginnings of advertising by film and how even at that time it was creativity and the spirit of adventure, as shown by Chevrolet, which won the day. Here’s to innovations."
