Barbara's visit to her father's grave along with her brother turns into a nightmare when a zombie kills Johnny. Barbarapanics and flees. She ends up in a safe house where Harry, his wife anddaughter are already hiding from the mysterious ghouls. Confusion is compounded by panic as everybody tries to figure out the best route of escape. Ben's suggestion that they remain upstairs wins over proud Harry's plan to barricade themselves in the cellar.

Despite Harry's stubborn streak, Ben and he have to work together. News of nearby shelters spurs Tom, his girlfriend and Ben to drive Ben's truck to a nearby gas pump. The couple never reaches it. Only Ben escapes. The ghouls eat Harry, a "sinner". The same fate meets all the others -except Ben who manages to survive. Finally a group of men who subscribeto the adage " kill the brain, you kill the ghoul" arrive and shoot the ghouls. Unfortunately Bill loses his life as well.
Romero'swonderful direction and the use of black and white photography have made the film a memorable one - but only for the stouth earted.

Running Time: 96 Minutes
MPAA Ratings: TV-MA

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

"Ghouls" were an unknown entity to moviegoers untilthe release of "The night of the living dead" in 1968. The story is ashorrifying as the title suggests and leaves one with mixed sentiments -fascination for direction and photography, and a queasy feeling underthe belt for its ghoulish portrayal of the unnatural.

A Girl seeking refuge from ghouls finds herself in the company of others whoare in the same boat - or more correctly the same safe house. Ghouls find them and have them for dinner one at a time until only one of them, Ben survives. But would the posse led by the sheriff be able totell Ben apart from the ghouls?

The story underlines the ghoulish philosophy that "sinners" must die.

USER REVIEWS:

A wave of mass murder sweeps across America as the recently dead return to life to kill and feast on their victims.A group of people board themselves up in an abandoned house to try and hold out against a small army of the undead. This is the classic low-budget horror film that is the model for recent hits such as the Evil Dead and The Blair Witch Project.George Romero stages anational disaster but reduces it to a single house for greater effect.Thestory focuses on the weaknesses of each of the characters in the house -their cowardice, their greedy, their stupidity etc. This makes the drama inside the house almost as palatable as the danger from outside and makes the characters more believable and important.

The undead are not huge works of special effects, nor are they anything other than lumbering beasts. But the threat they pose is well demonstrated- the film makes them feel unstoppable and relentless and makes their lingering presence more menacing and less comical than it could have been. The use of an unknown cast also makes it more realistic as none of them have any baggage. Duane Jones is the standout actor as Ben - who is not without flaws himself.

The down beat, realistic atmosphere to the film gives it a greater sense of tension and continues right through to the very depressing conclusion. An excellent flagship for low budget horrors. (written by bob the moo)
