In squeaky-clean New York at the turn of the century, playboy Charlie Hill falls so much in love that he can walk on air. The object of his affections is beautiful Angela Bonfils, a mission house worker in the Bowery. He promises to reform his dissolute life, even trying to do an honest day's work.

Running Time: 82 Minutes
MPAA Ratings: PG

This is an Astaire musical, so don't expect much in the storyline department. He's a man about town with an eye for the girls and a resolutely dissolute lifestyle. Then he meets Ellen who is doing good works in New York's slummy Bowery district. He falls in love but has to reform his wicked ways in order to win her love. Othello it ain't. Ellen didn't actually sing in the movie (she was dubbed by Anita Ellis), but she's able to hold her own in the dancing stakes with Astaire. Not a song-and-dance classic, but it remains an amiable enough way of passing an hour or so. Channel 4 reviews

The Belle of New York is a romantic musical comedy about a rich playboy Charlie Hill, played by the legendary Fred Astaire, who very much falls in love with a girl called Angela Bonfils (Vera Ellen) and he does everything to get this girl to himself. No time and they're getting married.Fred Astaire was a great performer. He could sing, he could dance, he could jump to the sky and fly.In this movie love really makes him fly in the air. The Belle of New York is a nice musical. Petri Pelkonen, Finland

Vera-Ellen partners Astaire charmingly, even if she's not the world's most dynamic actress, and she has a fun solo, "Naughy But Nice." As for Astaire, he's his usual self, and we'd want it no other way. His best number is the one least dependent on special effects, "I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man.""Gonna leave my footsteps on the sands of time," he sings. You surely did, Mr. A.
