The Orchon River Valley is one of the most important cultural landscapes in Mongolia and a place of great historical significance. Today herds of cattle and sheep graze in the wide river valley that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Valley is situated amid the Changai Mountains, birthplace of the Mongolian nation. At the time of the Turkish Tribes in the sixth century, fortifications were built in the valley for both administration and the production of weaponry. Thus craftsmen and other specialists from China and Turkestan came and the various fortified settlements grew into towns. The importance of the Orkhon Valley in the history of Middle Asia is beyond question a colourful historical, archaeological and cultural legacy.
