In the west of Colorado, there is a mighty crevice in the earth's surface, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. For the primeval inhabitants of North America, this dark rock lanscape must have seemed to be a magical place and was probably something they did their best to avoid, but today it is a popular tourist attraction. In some sections, the canyon is up to 900 metres deep. The rock walls can be read like a geological history book and the single layers indicate the early chapters of earth’s creation. The unspoiled landscape around the Black Canyon is an important habitat for many rare species such as the black bear and the puma. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a dark rock landscape that is not only unique but also provides a wonderful insight into the mysterious miracles of nature.
