Nowadays you take it for granted that when you turn on the tap out comes good quality water, but how is it moved around? In pipes, propelled with the help of high pressure pumps. But in the 1900’s much reliance was given to steam power to lift water from deep wells into treatment works and then to pump clean water to local reservoirs built in high ground for distribution by gravity to homes and businesses. In the 1960’s many of our Victorian and Edwardian engineering masterpieces were demolished, but some survived, such as the Giants of Brede steam pumping engines. Many of us hanker after a return to the “good old days” and the change of seeing the past in action, and maybe participating in its preservation for the future. Just six miles from Hastings stands the Brede Waterworks site, with two of its original tripe expansion steam engines housed in Grade II listed buildings.
