The Art of Dunhuang
Dunhuang in history, the Chinese people’s gateway to the Western Regions, used to be the most important through-station among the Silk Road, which was once the most famous road in the Sino-West transportation history. Dunhuang played a very dramatic role on the center stage in the history of the world. Dunhuang was once the visual terminus for the Chinese civilization, and also the place where China and the outside world shook hands with for the first time. Numerous nationalities in history have staged spectacular historic dramas here. Special historical opportunity and the harsh natural environment have sealed a period of unknown history here. The production team of “The Art of Dunhuang” manages to make every effort to create a documentary, which reflects the history and culture of Dunhuang in an all-round way. This documentary has recorded comprehensively the mighty and magnificent historical process of Dunhuang and stories scattered among them during 2100 years. This documentary has also presented the probe results from those scholars of Dunhuang Studies, who have been assiduously and untiringly studying this desert treasure-house for more than 100 years. The Documentary "The Art of Dunhuang" was created by the same production team of the "The Forbidden City", with a total of 10 episodes and 45 minutes for each episode. The production cycle is as long as 2 years. The shooting of "The Art of Dunhuang" receives a strong support from the Dunhuang Research Institute. They opened 77 caves (of which 50 caves have never been opened to the outside world) and the quantity of shooting in these caves is quite large and without precedent in history. As for the part of the historical reenactment in this Documentary, Japanese photographers have been engaged and the international photography of “real movie” has been adopted. This documentary will be broadcasted on CCTV during the prime time in October 2008.
