Dick and his crew of the Rambler leave the urban landscape of Dublin behind them to embark on the next leg of the journey. The outside world disappears as the canal dives into the “Deep Sinking” - a narrow rock cutting filled with extravagant vegetation. It runs from Castleknock to Clonsilla. Dick and the crew struggle slowly through with the Rambler. Dick wonders how on earth this phenomenal cutting was built over two hundred years ago.
Follow leading naturalist and broadcaster Dick Warner as he travels by barge along the Royal Canal from Dublin to Tarmonbarry and then onto Lough Ree in the Shannon. The series celebrates the final re-opening of the entire Royal Canal to navigation after more than half a century of dereliction. On his journey, Dick meets both experts and ordinary people who live along the banks, learning from them about its heritage, history and wildlife.
