But the country's beautiful tropical beaches are contrasted with a dark underbelly of sex tourism. Bangkok Bound takes a closer look at the personal stories behind these journeys to reveal some startling and, at times, truly remarkable experiences.
In program three, we meet an exotic photographer, a street wise nun and a war veteran. Adrian is returning to the more notorious scene of this exotic destination. A 33-year-old 'glamour' photographer, his mission is to persuade Thai women to model for him naked, to feed the growing British porn market for 'Asian babes'. "I like girls, that is the prime motivation. I can't imagine anything else I'd rather do, not even playing in a rock band or starring in a movie."
Sister Joan works in conjunction with Father Brenan's orphanage. She wanders around the seedy areas of Pattya counseling street children and tries to talk them out of leading such dangerous lives. "The sheer number of sex tourists make this a dangerous place for children, even during the day."
57-year-old Shirley's first ever trip to Thailand is an emotional pilgrimage. She lost her father in the Second World War when she was six months old. He died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Having recently been left money by her father's sister, Shirley has decided to spend the money fulfilling a dream she thought she would never be able to afford. The film crew follows Shirley to the cemetery, where her father's remains are. "I miss a father, you think of things that would have been very different if he'd been around."
